Botanischer Garten und Botanisches Museum

Botanischer Garten und Botanisches Museum is the botanical garden of the Freie Universität Berlin, spread over 43 hectares in the south-west of the city. There are really two amazing spaces to explore here; the glasshouses and the open grounds. The Great Tropical House, finished in 1907, is just begging to be photographed with its vast curved glass shell. By pointing your camera straight up into the roof frame you can experiment with the contrast of intricate geometry over the palm crowns. Plan some extra time while exploring the glasshouses since your lens will fog the moment you step inside and it takes a few minutes to clear. Outdoors, about a third of the grounds is laid out as a map of northern hemisphere vegetation, so the planting changes character as you explore each section. The Italian Garden has a distinctly formal feel with its all symmetry and terraces if your shooting style favors order over abstract. There is an admission fee to explore the gardens and set open hours. Ideally plan on being here for roughly half a day. (Berlin, Germany)
