Carved directly into the Kaibab limestone near the upper section of the Bright Angel Trail, this short hand-dug tunnel is one of the most character-rich details on one of America's most iconic hikes. The rough-hewn entrance frames a natural window into the canyon beyond, making it a compelling foreground element when you position yourself just outside and shoot through the opening toward the layered canyon walls and open sky. Early morning light works best here, with soft directional illumination bringing out the texture of the surrounding rock. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range lets you capture both the tunnel arch and the dramatic landscape it frames. The trail sees heavy foot traffic, so arriving early gives you a better chance at clean compositions without crowds. Watch your footing on the rocky path and be mindful of hikers passing through.
