Brockville Railway Tunnel
The Brockville Tunnel is a former railway tunnel uniquely located beneath the downtown. It is the first railway tunnel built in Canada, construction began in September 1854 and the first train passed through the tunnel on December 31, 1860. The tunnel was designed to provide a rail link from the timber trade of the Ottawa Valley to the Brockville port facilities on the St. Lawrence River ship route. It's no longer part of a function rail line and visitors can now walk from the south portal to the north portal, exiting at the north-end gorge and up a ramp to street level. It now features an LED coloured light system, which is programmed in various ways, along with a recorded music track playing while one walks through. (Brockville, Ontario, Canada)
