Buckingham Fountain

Buckingham Fountain - Photo by Vinicius Melo1 / 1

Buckingham Fountain is one of Chicago's most iconic landmarks, a massive Baroque-style fountain set at the heart of Grant Park with the city skyline rising behind it to the west. The classic composition here is from the south or east side of the fountain, shooting wide to capture the tiered basins and cascading water with the skyscrapers framing the background. A wide-angle lens works well for this, but a longer focal length lets you compress the skyline and make the buildings feel closer and more dramatic. Early morning gives you the cleanest light and fewest crowds, while the evening color-light shows, running from dusk until 11pm during the operating season, offer a completely different and vivid subject. The fountain is fully accessible, set on flat pavement with open space all around, so you can easily circle it and experiment with different angles and distances. (Chicago, Illinois, United States)
