Cammo Tower

Cammo Tower is a solitary 19th-century water tower standing in the quiet, semi-wild grounds of Cammo Estate, its round stone form and battlemented parapet rising above the surrounding trees to create a naturally dramatic subject. The tower photographs best from a slight distance, where you can use the overgrown hedgerows, gnarled trees, and estate ruins as framing elements in the foreground. Overcast days work particularly well here, as the flat Scottish light brings out the texture of the stonework without harsh shadows. You can also get close and shoot upward to emphasize the height and scale of the parapet against the sky. A wide angle lens suits the atmospheric surroundings, while a longer focal length lets you compress the treeline behind the tower for a moodier result. The estate is freely accessible via a short walk from the car park on Cammo Road. (Edinburgh, Scotland)
