Campbell House
Campbell House is one of Toronto's oldest surviving residential buildings, a stately Georgian-style brick manor that sits somewhat unexpectedly beside the busy intersection of Queen Street West and University Avenue. The contrast between the historic white facade and the modern glass towers surrounding it gives you strong compositional opportunities, particularly when you use a wide angle to include both the house and the skyline above it. The best light comes in the morning when the sun hits the south-facing front elevation directly, bringing out the texture of the brickwork and the symmetry of the windows. Shoot from across University Avenue for a clean frontal composition, or move around to the sides to capture the ornate details against the urban backdrop. A 24-35mm lens works well for environmental shots that emphasize the building in its city context. The surrounding sidewalks are open and accessible at all hours.
