Toronto City Hall features a unique pair of uneven towers, one standing 27 storeys and the other 20,designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell that opened in 1965. Two curved towers wrap around a saucer shaped council chamber that sits on a raised podium between them. Nathan Phillips Square stretches out in front. The reflecting pool is the centrepiece of the square, and in warmer months it mirrors the towers and the sky. In winter it becomes a public skating rink. The illuminated TORONTO sign sits at the south end of the pool and lights up at night. Three arched walkways called the Freedom Arches cross the pool and add strong geometric lines to the scene. The Old City Hall, a Romanesque Revival building from 1899, sits immediately to the east with its stone clocktower visible right alongside the curved concrete towers. Henry Moore's sculpture The Archer also sits in the square. Blue hour and night are especially photogenic with the interior lighting of the towers and the glow of the TORONTO sign on the water. The square is open and publicly accessible at all times. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
