Built in 1770 and anchored by its distinctive Moorish tower and sandstone facade, the Carmel Mission offers some of the most photogenic historic architecture on the California coast. The courtyard garden is a strong starting point, where roses, fountains, and arched colonnades give you natural framing opportunities throughout the grounds. Position yourself low in the garden to use the flowering foreground against the tower, or shoot through the archways for layered depth. The warm golden tones of the stone walls respond beautifully to early morning and late afternoon light, when shadows add texture and the facade glows without harsh contrast. A wide to standard zoom in the 24-50mm range handles most compositions well, though a longer focal length lets you isolate architectural details. The grounds are well maintained and easy to walk, with multiple angles available without needing to go far. (Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, United States)
