Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo
This modest stone chapel, built in 1794, carries enormous historical weight as California's oldest continuously operating parish and the last surviving building of the original Monterey Presidio. The rough-hewn facade, arched entryway, and thick adobe and stone walls give it a timeless quality that rewards close attention to texture and detail. Shoot tight on the weathered stonework and carved details around the doorway, or step back to frame the entire facade against the sky; a wide to standard zoom in the 24-50mm range handles both well. Morning light hits the front of the building with a warm, directional quality that brings out the texture in the stone walls. The surrounding historic district provides context for wider environmental shots. Street parking is available nearby and the exterior is easily accessible on foot from downtown Monterey.
