About Castel Welsperg
Castel Welsperg (Schloss Welsperg) is a medieval castle on a rocky hill just outside of Welsberg village. The castle's keep goes back to the early 1100s and the rest of the walls were slowly added over the next few centuries. The tall square keep rises high above everything else, and from the village the whole it looks more like a church tower sitting on the hillside than a defensive fort. Autumn is the perfect time to come on your shooting adventure. The larches on the surrounding slopes turn to rich gold and reds that contrast beautifully with grey castle walls. The castle is open to visitors from spring to the end of October (with an entry fee) but it closes for the winter. The surrounding trails are open to explore year round so you can still capture the castle from outside its defensive walls. Across the stream on the nearby wooded hill sits the ruin of Thurn with its tower keep and broken walls. The two sets of ruins make the perfect pair since you can shoot the both during the same walk. Two marked loops (the small and the big castle circuits) start in the village and climb past the castle and over to Thurn, with open views back down across the valley floor.
