About Castle Drogo
Castle Drogo sits on a granite bluff high above the Teign Gorge, on the northeast edge of Dartmoor. It was commissioned to be build it in 1911 and the work took more than twenty years. It was the last castle built in England, and that late date is what makes it so good to shoot. The granite was cut only a century ago, not in medival time like most castles so the edges are still crisp not weathered. Looking at it from the north lets the building stack up as a cluster of blocks at different heights, and low sun separates one mass from the next. Octagonal turrets rise above the gate and reward a closer frame. Make sure to take some time to walk down Hunter's Path to capture the wide view, with the castle on its bluff and the gorge falling away. Plus there is an intricate garden too, withl terraces and winding paths that is photogenic in any season. It is run by the National Trust so you will need to purchase a ticket, unless you are a member. Arriving early will give you more space to experiment with compositions and light before the tourists start arriving. (Drewsteignton, Devon, England)
