About The Old Stone Bridges, Fernworthy Reservoir
When the water drops at Fernworthy Reservoir, two granite crossings over the South Teign River that have been beautifully preserved due to being immersed in water for decades appear. One is a small arched stone bridge and just beside it sits an older clapper bridge, made of long flat slabs laid across the stream. Getting low along the old farm road lets you frame the arch with the South Teign River trickling through it, or you can step back to the field walls for a wider shot that shows just how far the water level has dropped. The grey granite goes flat under hard midday sun so try to pair your shooting adventure with overcast skies or low morning light to bring out the weathered texture of the stone. Mist is common up here, and it really adds to the lonely, forgotten vibe to your compositions. The ground near the old riverbed stays soft even after the water pulls back, so stick to the old farm track or trails. Both bridges sit at the western end of the reservoir, just a short walk from the main car park along a path that circles the whole reservoir. They only show up in dry spells, so capturing them will be more about careful planning paired and timing your shooting outing before the next wet spell puts them back underwater.
