Built in the heart of downtown Birmingham, this Gothic Revival cathedral is one of the oldest and most architecturally striking churches in the city, with its soaring stone tower, pointed arches, and intricate facade offering strong material for architectural photography. Position yourself across the street or slightly to the side to capture the full height of the tower with a wide angle lens, or move in close to isolate the carved stonework and arched entryway for detail shots. Overcast days work particularly well here, as soft diffused light brings out the texture of the stone without harsh shadows cutting across the facade. Early morning on weekdays is ideal since foot traffic is minimal and you have more freedom to set up without interruption. A 16-35mm lens handles the full exterior well, while a 50mm or longer lets you compress the tower against the surrounding buildings. (Birmingham, Alabama, United States)
