At over 5,400 meters above sea level, Chacaltaya is one of the highest accessible peaks in the Andes, offering sweeping panoramic views across the Cordillera Real and down toward La Paz in the valley below. The dramatic altitude creates a stark, otherworldly landscape where remnant ice patches, volcanic rock, and open sky dominate your frame. Shoot wide to capture the full scale of the surrounding peaks and the sense of exposure at the summit, or zoom in on the textured rock and ice details that tell the story of the retreating glacier. Morning light is ideal, arriving before clouds build up around the peaks, which typically happens by midday. The road to the summit is accessible by vehicle, but the thin air will slow you down once you step out, so give yourself time to acclimate before rushing to set up your shot. (La Paz, Bolivia)
