Chappel Viaduct
Standing over the River Colne in the Essex countryside, this Victorian brick viaduct stretches 1066 feet across the valley on 32 elegant arches, making it the longest viaduct in East Anglia. The signature shot is standing directly beneath the structure and looking along the tunnel of repeating arches, which compress into a strong vanishing point and reward a wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range. You can also work from the riverbank below for a classic side-on view that shows the full scale of the structure reflected in calm water. Overcast days are ideal for shooting the arch tunnel, as even light prevents harsh shadows from breaking up the brickwork. For the exterior riverside view, golden hour adds warm tones to the red brick. The viaduct is accessible on foot from the village of Chappel, and the ground beneath is firm enough to set up a tripod comfortably. (Chappel, Essex, England)
