Dominating the town, Vitré's medieval castle rises on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Vilaine, and is one of the most impressive in Brittany – a real fairy tale of spires and drawbridges. A stone castle has stood on this spot dating back to the end of the 11th century. During the first half of the 13th century, Baron André III, rebuilt the castle into its present triangular form, following the contours of the rocks, surrounded with dry moats. During the 15th century the castle was enlarged and its formidable defences were completed. (Vitré, France)
