The Crooked Spire is one of England's most distinctive landmarks, a medieval lead-covered spire that twists and leans dramatically away from its base in a way that makes it look almost impossible to photograph badly. The distorted shape rewards experimentation with focal length; a wide angle from close in exaggerates the lean, while a short telephoto from further back lets you compress the geometry and show how dramatically it deviates from vertical. Frame from the churchyard to include gravestones or the stone walls as foreground interest, or step back to the surrounding streets for a tighter composition isolating the spire against the sky. Overcast days work well here, as flat light brings out the texture of the lead cladding without harsh shadows. Golden hour adds warmth but any lighting condition suits this subject. The church sits right in Chesterfield town centre and is easy to walk to from the market square. (Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England)
