Chi Lin Nunnery is a serene Buddhist temple complex built entirely without nails using traditional Tang Dynasty joinery, giving it a warm, honey-toned wooden aesthetic that stands out dramatically against Hong Kong's urban backdrop. The symmetrical halls and courtyards reward careful compositions; try centering the main pavilion from the front courtyard gate for a classic straight-on shot, or work the side angles where curving rooftiles layer against each other beautifully. The adjacent Nan Lian Garden shares the same Tang-style architecture and offers lotus ponds and manicured pines that add foreground interest. Morning light is ideal, arriving early when the complex opens to avoid crowds and catch soft directional light across the carved wooden facades. A 24-70mm lens covers most situations here, from wide establishing shots to tighter details on the roof ornaments and gilded statues inside the halls. Entry is free and the grounds are calm and walkable. (Diamond Hill, Kowloon, Hong Kong)
