Chicago Portage National Historic Site
This quiet, often-overlooked green space marks the historic water route used by Marquette and Jolliet in the 1670s, and it offers a surprisingly photogenic mix of wooded riverbank, still water reflections, and a bronze sculpture depicting the two explorers hauling their canoe. The sculpture itself is your main subject, and shooting low and close lets you frame it dramatically against the tree canopy or overcast sky. The surrounding wetland and slow-moving Des Plaines River add depth and context, especially when morning mist sits over the water. Overcast days work beautifully here, softening the light and reducing harsh shadows on the bronze figures. A 24-70mm lens covers most compositions well, from tight detail shots of the sculpture to wider environmental frames that capture the marshy landscape. Parking is limited but accessible off East Joliet Avenue. (Chicago, Illinois, United States)
