Union Stock Yard Gate

This ornate limestone gate is the last remaining structure of Chicago's once vast Union Stock Yards, which at their peak processed more livestock than anywhere else in the world. The arch itself is the main subject, with its carved stone detailing, decorative bull's head at the keystone, and flanking turrets giving you strong architectural lines to work with. Shoot straight on to emphasize the symmetry, or move to a low angle to make the arch feel more imposing against the sky. Overcast days work well here because soft, even light brings out the texture of the carved stone without harsh shadows. A 24-70mm lens covers most compositions comfortably. The gate sits along Exchange Avenue in the Bridgeport neighborhood and is easily accessible by car or transit; street parking is generally available nearby. (Chicago, Illinois, United States)
