China Wall

China Wall is a dramatic ridge of jagged lava rock that drops sharply into the Pacific, creating a striking natural barrier between calm inland waters and the open ocean. The contrast between the rough, dark volcanic rock and the turquoise and deep blue water on either side gives you strong graphic compositions, especially when surfers or cliff jumpers are in frame to add scale and human energy. Shooting from the ridge itself, you can work wide to capture the full sweep of the coastline, or compress the scene with a longer lens to isolate the waves crashing against the rock face. Sunset is the standout time to visit, with warm light raking across the textured lava and the sky often turning vivid orange and pink.
