Spitting Cave is a dramatic lava rock outcropping on Oahu's southeast coast where powerful waves surge into a sea cave and explode upward in spectacular bursts of whitewater. You can shoot from the cliff's edge looking down into the cave opening, framing the turquoise water against the dark volcanic rock, or pull back wider to capture the full coastline with the ocean horizon behind it. Sunset brings warm golden light that makes the water glow and adds depth to the rugged textures of the lava. A wide angle lens works well for the full scene, while a telephoto lets you isolate the wave action from a safe distance. The cave sits behind a residential neighborhood; park at the end of Lumahai Street and follow the narrow trail between two houses, watching for a small sign. The path is steep and the rocks are slippery, so wear grippy shoes and move carefully. (Hawaii Kai, Oahu, Hawaii, United States)
