Chirk Aqueduct and Viaduct form one of the most photogenic pairings of industrial heritage in Wales, where Thomas Telford's 1801 canal aqueduct stands shoulder to shoulder with the taller railway viaduct, both spanning the green Ceiriog Valley on elegant stone arches. The best compositions come from the valley floor, where you can frame both structures together with the wooded hillside as a backdrop; a wide to standard zoom in the 24-70mm range works well here. Walking the towpath across the aqueduct itself gives you a unique high perspective looking down into the valley. Overcast days suit this location well, keeping the stone tones even and avoiding harsh shadows in the arches. You can also shoot from the Welsh side of the valley for a three-quarter angle that shows the depth of both structures. Access is straightforward via footpaths from Chirk station or the nearby canal towpath. (Chirk, Wrexham, Wales, United Kingdom)
