Chrome Hill
Chrome Hill is a dramatic limestone reef knoll rising sharply above the upper Dove Valley, its steep grassy flanks and jagged ridge giving it an almost alpine character unusual for the Peak District. The classic composition places the hill as a bold pyramid in the frame, best achieved from the valley floor near Dowall Hall Farm, where you can use the winding River Dove or dry stone walls as foreground interest. The opposing knoll of Parkhouse Hill makes a strong companion subject, and shooting from the col between the two gives you a wider ridge-line perspective. Early morning mist frequently pools in the valley below, and golden hour light rakes across the limestone outcrops beautifully. A wide to standard zoom works well here, though a longer focal length helps compress the hill against a moody sky. Park carefully along the narrow lane and expect uneven terrain on the approach.
