Parkhouse Hill

Parkhouse Hill is a dramatic, shark-fin shaped limestone peak rising sharply from the meadows of the Dove Valley, making it one of the most distinctive natural subjects in the Peak District. Its jagged ridgeline photographs beautifully from the surrounding fields, particularly from the lower pastures to the south where you can frame the hill against open sky with dry stone walls or wildflowers in the foreground. The neighbouring Chrome Hill makes an excellent compositional pairing, and shooting from the col between the two gives you a strong sense of the rolling reef knoll landscape. Early morning is ideal, when low mist often settles in the valley and wraps around the base of the hill, adding real depth and atmosphere. Wear sturdy footwear as the ground is often muddy, and a wide to mid-range zoom works well for capturing both the intimate details and the wider valley context. (Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire, England)
