Conolly's Folly is a striking 18th-century monument rising above the flat Kildare countryside, built as a freestanding arch stacked with smaller arches, stone pineapples, and eagles, all crowned by a tall obelisk pillar. The structure has a dramatic verticality that rewards wide shots from a distance, where you can frame it against open sky and surrounding fields, as well as close-up detail work on the carved stonework and decorative elements. Shoot from the south to align the folly with the long axial view back toward Castletown House, which gives you a strong compositional anchor. Overcast days work surprisingly well here, softening shadows and bringing out the texture of the stone, though golden hour light from the west adds warmth and depth. A wide-to-standard zoom covers most situations. The folly sits on private grounds within the Castletown Estate, so check access arrangements through the Office of Public Works before visiting.
