Cragsmoor Stone Church

Perched on a ridge in the tiny hamlet of Cragsmoor, this beautifully preserved 19th-century stone church offers two distinct shooting opportunities in one stop. The rugged fieldstone exterior pairs naturally with the surrounding woodland, so work in close with a wide angle to emphasize the texture of the masonry against the sky, or pull back to include the tree canopy framing the steeple. The wooden interior rewards a longer exposure in soft window light, capturing the warm tones of the pews and simple altar. Behind the church, a small stone arch and benches sit right at the edge of the ridge, giving you a dramatic foreground for sweeping valley views below. Overcast days work particularly well here, keeping contrast manageable on the stonework. The site is quiet and uncrowded, parking is limited but the area is compact, and a 24-70mm covers most of what you need. (Cragsmoor, New York, United States)
