Stony Kill Falls is an 87-foot cascade tucked into the southwest corner of Minnewaska State Park Preserve, most dramatic in spring when snowmelt pushes the flow into a thundering curtain of white water. The falls split naturally into upper and lower sections, giving you two distinct compositions to work with. From the base, a wide angle lens lets you capture the full drop while incorporating the mossy boulder field in the foreground; the upper falls reward the extra scramble with a tighter, more intimate perspective looking down into the gorge. The trail itself is worth shooting, with stone steps weaving through boulders and two wooden footbridges that serve as natural leading lines. Overcast days are ideal here since the canyon shade can create harsh contrast in direct sun. Wear waterproof boots, as the rocks near the base stay wet and slippery year-round.
