About Cresta de Bèrnia
Cresta de Bèrnia is a rocky lookout on the Serra de Bèrnia ridge above Altea, with a huge view south over the valley to the Mediterranean. Up here the ground is a jumble of pale grey limestone boulders, tufted with green dwarf palms and scrub. Below, the valley spreads out in a patchwork of small farms and orchards, all the way to the coast. On a clear day the high rises of Benidorm appear way off in the distance. You can easily explore along the ridge in either direction, to experiment with capturing various angles to highlight both the coastline and/or the nearby peaks. The lookout faces south, so the rocks catch sun most of the day. Late afternoon warms up the pale stone and cuts through the haze that often sits over the coast. This is an amazing spot if you are chasing either sunrise or sunset compositions since there is lots of space to set up looking in either direction. If you are lucky enough to capture storm clouds rolling over the ridge you will be able to give your compositions a much moodier vibe. This ridge line is accessible by hiking up from Cases de Bèrnia above Xaló on a well marked loop trail. Make sure to add some extra time to your plans so you can pause as the trail passes by the ruins of the old Fort de Bèrnia just before the lookout. (Altea, Alicante, Spain)
