Crowstone Obelisk

Crowstone Obelisk - Photo by Simon Hastelow1 / 1

This striking Georgian obelisk stands on the Thames Estuary foreshore at Chalkwell, marking the historic Yantlet Line, the eastern boundary of the Port of London Authority's jurisdiction. The stone itself is a clean, elegant monument that pairs beautifully with the wide, open estuary stretching behind it, giving you strong geometric contrast against the flat water and vast sky. Shoot from low on the beach to make the obelisk feel monumental against the horizon, or step back to include the foreshore textures and any moored boats in the frame. A wide angle lens works well to capture the expansive estuary, while a short telephoto lets you compress the distant Kent shoreline behind the stone. Golden hour at low tide is ideal, when wet sand reflects the light and the mudflats add texture and depth to the scene. The obelisk is accessible on foot along the seafront path from Chalkwell station. (Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England)
