Devoke Water

Devoke Water - Photo by chrislord1 / 1

Devoke Water is a remote, high-altitude tarn in the western fells, far from the crowds that fill the central Lake District, giving you a genuine sense of solitude that comes through in images. The glassy surface reflects the surrounding moorland beautifully on calm days, and the ruined stone shelter along the eastern shoreline adds a strong foreground subject with real character. Position yourself low near the water's edge to capture reflections, or use the shelter as an anchor point with the tarn and open sky behind it. A wide angle lens works well to pull in the expansive moorland feel, while a short telephoto can isolate the ruin against the hills. Early morning gives you the best chance of still water and soft light; overcast days actually suit this spot, adding mood without harsh shadows. The walk in from Birker Fell road takes around 20 to 30 minutes on a straightforward path. (Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England)
