Wast Water
Wast Water is England's deepest lake, sitting in a dramatic glacial valley in the western Lake District, ringed by some of the highest fells in the country including Scafell Pike. The combination of dark, mirror-still water and the towering scree slopes on the southern shore gives you compositions that feel unlike anywhere else in England. The scree slopes themselves make a striking subject, plunging almost vertically into the lake, and you can frame them with the reflections below and sky above for a strong layered shot. The northern shoreline road offers classic wide-angle views looking down the lake toward Great Gable. Early morning is ideal when the water is calm and mist sometimes lingers in the valley. A wide lens in the 16-24mm range works well here. The road along the lake is narrow with limited parking, so arrive early and be prepared to walk a short distance to find your spot.
