Discovery Park Beach
Discovery Park Beach sits at the base of Magnolia Bluff along Puget Sound, where a wide pebbled shoreline is scattered with weathered driftwood logs that make for strong foreground elements. At low tide the beach opens up considerably, giving you room to work and exposing tide pools and wet sand that reflect the sky. The Olympic Mountains rise across the water to the west, making them a natural backdrop for wide compositions; a 24-35mm lens works well here for capturing both the foreground textures and the distant range. Sunset is the prime time to visit, with warm light hitting the mountains and golden tones spreading across the sound. Getting down low near the driftwood and using it as a leading line toward the peaks is one of the most effective approaches. Note that the beach requires a moderate walk down from the upper parking areas, so plan for the hike in and out. (Seattle, Washington, United States)
