Donner Summit Bridge

Donner Summit Bridge - Photo by Matthew Rhodes1 / 1

Built in the 1920s as part of historic US Route 40, this elegant concrete arch bridge sits at elevation near Donner Summit and frames one of the Sierra Nevada's most rewarding views, with Donner Lake, the town of Truckee, and surrounding peaks stretching out below. The classic arch structure itself makes a strong subject, and you can position yourself along the old highway to use the bridge as a leading line drawing the eye toward the lake and valley beyond. A wide to mid-range lens works well for capturing both the bridge and the landscape together, while a telephoto lets you compress the layers of the scene. Early morning light is ideal, with soft alpenglow hitting the peaks and mist occasionally sitting over the lake. The road is no longer active traffic, making it easy to set up without rushing; winter visits add snow to the arch and surrounding pines for a dramatic composition.
