Dorumer Hafen

Dorumer Hafen is a quaint little fishing harbour sitting on the edge of the Wadden Sea. It is one of three little shrimp-cutter harbours along this stretch of coast. A handful of colourful fishing boats work out of here so various boats are often coming/going in the harbour. Low tide is the ideal time to plan around. When the water level drops, the harbour drains down to soft mud and the boats settle in to wait for its return. This low tide view is amazing to experiment with. You can easily get down low near the mud and use the wet channel for reflections of the hulls and masts. The line of boats and the little bit of remaining water leads your eye right towards the horizon, so a wide lens down the centre of harbour lets you play around with leading lines. The fishing boats are usually painted in bright blues, reds and yellows, which pop against the grey mud creating amazing contrast. You can walk the quay for free, so access is easy. Since the coastline opens west onto the Wadden Sea, try to pair low tide with sunset. The Obereversand lighthouse sits a short way off and makes an easy second subject to play around with while you are waiting for the tide levels to be perfect. (Dorum-Neufeld, Germany)
