Dow's Lake Boardwalk runs along the western edge of this calm urban lake, where the Rideau Canal meets a wide open stretch of water with the Pavilion building anchoring the scene as a classic backdrop. You can shoot along the boardwalk itself, using the railing and pathway as a leading line drawing the eye toward the Pavilion, or position yourself closer to the water's edge to capture reflections of the surrounding trees and city lights. Evening is one of the best times to visit, when the Pavilion lights up and the lake surface mirrors the warm glow. Winter transforms the scene entirely, with the Rideau Canal Skateway bringing skaters onto the ice for compelling foreground interest. Come spring, the Canadian Tulip Festival fills the surrounding grounds with color, making wide-angle shots especially rewarding. The boardwalk is flat and easy to walk, with plenty of room to set up a tripod. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
