Standing on a rocky ledge the ruins of Dunure Castle lookout over the coastline of southwest Scotland. The remains are from the days when this was the main stronghold of the powerful Kennedy family. The castle has had quite the colourful past, from a three day visit by Mary, Queen of Scots to battles over land rights. These days it is a peaceful ruin with a stunning view you can wander freely. The broken stone walls sit right on the edge of the sea, with the Firth of Clyde stretching out behind and the Isle of Arran on the horizon. You can easily capture the ruins, rock and water all in one frame. This coast faces west, which makes it a perfect spot to experiment with sunset photography. The old stone warms and then slowly turns to a silhouette as the sun drops into the water. There are endless possibilities within the castle grounds, you can capture the ruins from the grass for the classic approach, then drop down to the rocky shoreline below for a more dramatic angle of the castle rising off the ledge above. Fans of Outlander will recognize the harbour and castle ruins from the show. There is parking close by that sometimes requires a small seasonal fee, plus the village has a café and pub to round out your day after you finish shooting. (Dunure, South Ayrshire, UK)
