Elmira Nature Reserve

Elmira Nature Reserve - Photo by ranpenn1 / 1

Though it’s a new project, there’s already much to see at the Elmira Nature Reserve. The 26.3 ha (65-acre) project area, runs in an area between Union Street and the railroad tracks. The group behind the idea for the reserve is Trees for Woolwich, a volunteer community group dedicated to planting more trees (38,000 trees since 2011) in the township. The parcel of land east of Union Street is owned by the township, and is mostly floodplain. The Reserve includes a location known as "The Habitats", a six-acre field that’s being turned into a showcase of five different habitats that can be found within southern Ontario: tall grass prairie, oak savannah, maple beech forest, early succession forest and wetland.
