Epping Forest

Epping Forest is a vast ancient woodland stretching across the Essex and London border, offering dense groves of ancient pollarded beech and hornbeam trees that create dramatic canopy tunnels and dappled light throughout the year. Autumn is the standout season, when the forest fills with deep copper, amber, and gold tones that reward wide compositions as well as tight detail shots of fallen leaves and gnarled bark. Early morning is your best window, when mist often settles between the trees and the low angle of light filters through the canopy in long, atmospheric rays. A 24-70mm lens handles most situations well, though a longer focal length helps compress the rows of tree trunks into layered, graphic patterns. Park at one of the roadside pull-ins near Loughton or High Beach to access the denser interior quickly, and head deeper into the forest to leave visitors behind and find quieter compositions.
