Exchange Building

Exchange Building - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Built in 1903, the Exchange Building is a striking Beaux-Arts structure in Old Montreal, known for its grand columnar facade, ornate arches, and detailed stonework that reward close attention. You can shoot the full facade straight on from across the street to capture its symmetry, or work from a low angle to emphasize the columns rising upward. A wide-angle or 24-35mm lens works well for the full facade, while a longer focal length lets you isolate carved details and decorative elements. Overcast days are ideal here since the building sits on a relatively narrow street and direct sunlight can create harsh shadows across the columns. Early morning on a clear day gives you softer light with fewer pedestrians in the frame. The surrounding streets of Old Montreal also offer interesting foreground elements like cobblestones and period lampposts to add depth to your compositions. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
