Tucked into the otherworldly granite formations of Alabama Hills, this natural arch frames a natural window through ancient weathered rock, offering compositions that layer rugged foreground detail against the sweeping Owens Valley and the dramatic Sierra Nevada beyond. You can shoot through the arch from below to frame distant peaks, or climb slightly above it to silhouette the opening against the sky. The arch is visible from Movie Road, and a short scramble up the hillside puts you right at it, so sturdy footwear is worth wearing but nothing technical is required. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well for capturing the full span of the opening with surrounding rock texture. Golden hour light warms the orange granite beautifully, and the dark skies here make it a rewarding spot for astrophotography, with the arch serving as a natural frame for the Milky Way on clear nights.
