Fox Glacier Valley gives you a dramatic corridor of raw glacial landscape, with a braided river running through a wide valley floor flanked by steep, bush-covered peaks and the blue-white tongue of the glacier pushing down from the Southern Alps above. The walking track winds through regenerating forest and over rocky outwash plains, offering multiple compositions along the way, from wide shots using the valley walls as natural framing to close details of the river braid patterns and weathered rock. Overcast days are ideal here because the soft, diffused light tames the harsh contrast between snow, rock, and shadow, though clear mornings can give you beautiful alpenglow on the peaks. A wide angle lens suits the grand scale of the valley, while a telephoto lets you compress the glacier against the mountains behind it. The viewing platform at the end of the trail gives a clean sightline toward the retreating ice. (Westland Tai Poutini National Park, South Island, New Zealand)
