Giethoorn Canals
Often called the Venice of the North, this car-free village in the Dutch province of Overijssel is built entirely around a network of narrow canals lined with thatched-roof farmhouses, wooden footbridges, and lush gardens. The small arched bridges are your best compositional anchor, especially when you can frame a cottage and its reflection in the still water below. A wide-angle lens works well for sweeping canal views, while a short telephoto lets you compress the layers of reeds, bridges, and rooftops. Early morning on weekdays gives you the calmest water and fewest tourists, which makes a big difference for clean reflections. Rent a silent electric boat to access angles that are impossible from the footpaths. Overcast days actually suit this place well, softening the light and keeping reflections glassy. The village center around the Dorpsgracht is the most photogenic stretch to explore first. (Giethoorn, Overijssel, Netherlands)
