Tucked away just off of Byres Road is the amazing hidden gem of Ashton Lane. This narrow cobbled backstreet in the heart of the West End is just begging to be photographed. The canopy of lights strung overhead along the lane turns the passage into a glowing tunnel after dark. The cobbles, old brick and stone buildings, and a collection of bars, cafes and the Grosvenor cinema all create an incredible varity of detail to work with. The Gardener sits partway down with its exterior wrapped in greenery and flowers, making it an standout subject on its own. Dusk and blue hour are the ideal times to shoot. Wait for the string lights to come on while there is still a little colour in the sky, and the warm bulbs balance nicely against the cooler tones overhead. Shoot straight down the lane to use the lights as leading lines, or move in close on a single frontage like The Gardener for tighter detail. The lane is narrow, so a wider lens helps since you will not have much room to back up. It gets busy most evenings, so come early for a quieter frame or lean into the crowds for atmosphere. Access is simple from along Byres Road but east to miss if you aren't keeping an eye out for it. (Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom)
