Glenogle Viaduct is a striking Victorian railway structure stretching across a glacially carved Highland glen, its twelve stone arches sitting against steep hillsides that turn golden in autumn or glow vivid green in summer. The most rewarding composition places the full sweep of the viaduct in frame with the glen walls rising dramatically on either side; pull over at the layby along the A827 and shoot from slightly elevated ground to avoid foreground clutter. A wide to mid-range lens works well for capturing the full span, while a longer focal length lets you isolate individual arches with the hillside texture behind. Overcast days are actually ideal here, as the soft diffused light brings out the texture of the stonework without harsh shadows. You can also walk out across the fields for closer perspectives looking up through the arches. The site is open and accessible, though the ground can be boggy after rain, so waterproof footwear is worthwhile. (Lochearnhead, Stirling, Scotland)
