The Grand Prismatic Spring is Yellowstone's most visually spectacular thermal feature, a massive boiling pool ringed by vivid bands of orange, yellow, and green microbial mats that fade into a deep, impossibly blue center. The challenge here is that the ground-level boardwalk, while close to the spring, limits your perspective and makes it hard to capture the full scale and color pattern. For the iconic overhead shot showing the full rainbow rings, hike the Fairy Falls Trail to the informal overlook on the ridge to the southwest, which gives you a sweeping elevated view of the entire spring and its steam plumes. Midday light with some direct sun brings out the most saturated colors, while morning mist adds atmosphere. A wide-angle lens works well from the overlook, and a telephoto lets you compress the steam against the landscape. Crowds are heavy in summer, so arriving early helps.
