About Great Auditorium

The Great Auditorium is an impressive 1890s wooden hall sitting in the heart of Ocean Grove. Incredibly shipbuilders raised this huge building it in about 90 days. The Auditorium is covered in unique details ranging from its unique (and eye catching) paint job to the soaring cross that sits on its roof. Rows of barn doors filled with coloured glass run along the sides beneath the long barrel roof, making every side equally fun to photograph. From May to September, 114 canvas tents with striped awnings stand in tight rows around it. Ocean Path Park sits in front of the Auditorium and stretches out all the way to the beach, so nothing stands in between the two. You can set up near the beach along the Ocean Ave Boardwalk and have a clear view of the Auditorium with rows of cottage framing both sides of the shot. A telephoto from there compresses the pathway and stacks the hall tight behind the greenspace of the park. Make sure to take some time to walk the narrow lanes of Tent City for close frames of striped canvas against the wooden walls. In the evening the sun drops behind the Auditorium, and its roof line turns to silhouette with its cross slowly lighting up as it gets darker. The Auditorium sits on Pilgrim Pathway, a short walk from the boardwalk and Main Avenue so it is easy to add to a day exploring Ocean Grove. (Ocean Grove, New Jersey, United States)
