About Grosnez Castle

Grosnez Castle is a ruined 14th century castle sitting high on the cliffs at the far northwest corner of Jersey. Philippe de Carteret held it against the French when they occupied half the island in the 1460s, but it's been sitting in ruins since the middle of the 16th century. Portions of the granite gatehouse are still standing with its pointed archway and stretches of the walls tracing the layout along the headland. The cliffs drop straight to the sea on three sides giving amazing views out into the endless water. There is lots of space to experiment with framing the water through the archway, and on a clear day you can add Guernsey and Sark into the shot across the channel. You can explore the whole headland and use the surrounding meadows to make a nice foreground for the gatehouse against the sky. Sunset is the ideal time to plan on being here. The sun going down over the sea creating amazing colours and warming up the stone. After you are done capturing the ruins make sure to follow the concrete steps behind the castle to capture the signal station too. Exploring the castle grounds and parking are both free, and the ruins are open year round. Plus if you've got time, the coastal path toward Plémont starts right from the car park.
