Gullfoss
Gullfoss is a two-tiered glacial waterfall on the Hvítá River, dropping into a dramatic narrow canyon that produces thick mist and a constant roar. The upper viewing path gives you a wide perspective over both cascades together, while the lower trail brings you close enough to feel the spray and shoot the water rushing into the gorge at an almost eye-level angle. A polarizing filter is essential here to cut through the mist and bring out the color in the churning water. Midday overcast light works surprisingly well, softening shadows and keeping detail in the white water. On sunny days, rainbows regularly form in the spray, so watch for those when the sun is out. Wear waterproof gear and keep a lens cloth handy; the mist will coat your glass quickly. A wide-angle lens in the 16-24mm range suits most compositions well.
