Standing over the River Wye in Monsal Dale, this Victorian railway viaduct is one of the most photographed structures in the Peak District, combining elegant stone arches with a dramatic limestone gorge setting. The classic composition places you on the hillside trail above the dale, looking down to frame all five arches spanning the river with the wooded valley stretching behind. A wide to standard zoom, something in the 24-70mm range, handles most angles well. Early morning light is ideal when mist often sits in the valley floor and the low sun catches the warm limestone, while overcast days keep the contrast manageable in the gorge's deep shadows. You can also walk the Monsal Trail across the viaduct itself for a different perspective looking down into the river bend. The paths are well maintained and the viewpoints are easy to reach from the Monsal Head car park just above. (Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, England)
